Private toll roads to be scrutinised after Greens secure Senate inquiry

The financial arrangements and transparency of the operations of private toll roads around the country are set to be put under the spotlight after The Greens secured a Senate Inquiry into toll roads today.

Senator Janet Rice, Greens transport and infrastructure spokesperson, noted that governments around the country are refusing to provide proper transparency and accountability of their dealings and contracts with private toll road operators .

Electric vehicle targets lagging under Turnbull Government, Greens call for action

Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens spokesperson for transport, has called on the government to do more to increase the uptake of electric vehicles following the release of the Climateworks report into electric vehicle ownership.

“This report shows just how far Australia is falling behind on electric vehicle ownership, with electric vehicles making up only 0.1% of the new car sales market,” said Senator Rice.

Senate calls for federal investment for people who ride bikes

The Senate has supported a Greens motion acknowledging the importance of bike riding for millions of Australians and calling on the federal government to invest in better cycling infrastructure.

“Australians deserve the freedom to ride safely whenever they want,” said the Australian Greens transport and infrastructure spokesperson Senator Janet Rice.

“We’ve seen too many instances of people hit while riding, most of which could have been prevented with proper cycling infrastructure.”

The WA election result represents an overwhelming victory for communities standing up against toll road agendas, say the Greens.

Victorians crying out for PT funding

With reports the federal and Victorian governments are close to an agreement on infrastructure spending, the Greens say public transport projects must be the priority.

“Victorians have had to put up with packed trains, slow trams and infrequent buses for far too long,” said Senator Janet Rice.

“With Melbourne Metro so high on the IA priority list, the Prime Minister would be wise to fund this essential project.

“Come on, Malcolm Turnbull – Victorians want the choice of public transport that works.”
