Greens call on Labor and Coalition to support bill to axe tampon tax

The Greens today welcomed Deputy Labor Leader Tanya Plibersek's comments that she wants to see the GST on menstrual hygiene products scrapped and called on Labor and the Coalition to support parliamentary action to axe the 'tampon tax'.

"The Greens are drafting a bill to fix this unfair and discriminatory tax, and we need Labor to get on board and support it," said Senator Janet Rice, Greens spokesperson for women.

"Tampons, pads and sanitary items aren't an optional luxury, so they shouldn't attract GST."

Greens call on Turnbull government to step up to family, domestic and sexual violence crisis

Today’s release of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s report on Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence demonstrates Australia continues to be in the grip of a domestic violence epidemic, and the Greens have called on the Turnbull government to take national leadership and provide the level of resources needed to tackle this crisis.

“This staggering report paints a distressing picture of domestic violence and family violence in this country,” said Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens spokesperson for women.

Greens motion calling for Turnbull Government action on abortion passes Senate

The Senate has today passed a Greens motion calling on the government to ensure safe, surgical abortions are available in public hospitals across the country.

 

“I’m glad this motion passed. It’s 2018. Women should have access to reproductive health services including surgical abortions in our public health system, no matter which state they live in, no matter whether they live in a city, or rural or regional area,” said Senator Janet Rice, Greens spokesperson for women.

Greens won’t stand for any roll back of women’s healthcare rights

The Australian Greens have vowed to fight a push by the Australian Christian Lobby for Australia to copy President Trump’s ban on foreign aid funding for abortion services.

“This is an irresponsible campaign that would just send women to dangerous underground clinics,” said the Australian Greens acting spokesperson for women Senator Janet Rice.

Under a similar ban instituted under John Howard in a horse-trade deal with Senator Brian Harradine, maternal deaths in Papua New Guinea jumped a horrific 56 per cent. The ban has since been scrapped.

Greens to Turnbull: scrap DV legal cuts for International Women’s Day

The Greens have urged the Prime Minister to mark International Women’s Day by scrapping plans to cut $34 million from funding for community legal centres that provide domestic violence services.

“Despite professing to care about gender equality, the Coalition government still plans to cut $34 million of core funding from crucial frontline legal services for women and children fleeing domestic violence,” said the Australian Greens acting spokesperson for women Senator Janet Rice.   

“These may be Abbott-era cuts, but they have now become Turnbull’s responsibility.
